The Cleveland Institute of Art's Reinberger Gallery and Alumni Council proudly present Are We There Yet?, the 2024 Alumni Exhibition.

Curated by Magdalena Moskalewicz and marking a point in time for 40 different CIA alumni, this exhibition attempts to tackle the question: What is it to become a mature artist? The show spans six decades of CIA graduates, from the most recent, in 2023, all the way back to 1961, becoming an extraordinary testament to a 62-year period of continuous art school education.

"Are we there yet?" A childhood question typically prompted by boredom on a long journey can also serve as a marker of a more existential angst. When pursuing a lifetime of art making, how can we tell if we’ve arrived? Art school graduation often marks the first destination on an artist’s professionalization journey—but the subsequent landmarks become less clear.

Coming together at one point in time, three distinct generations of makers present their recent practice: whether still earlyish, experimental attempts or established forms developed over decades of making. Regardless of age and stage of career, the artists share common pursuits: be it an exploration of form, expression of identity, analysis of social and political issues or a probe of our environmental awareness. Are we there yet on any of these subjects?

The exhibition is accompanied by an extensive brochure featuring artists’ reflections on artistic maturity and their own career trajectories since graduation.

Are We There Yet? will be on view from June 21 through August 9 in CIA's Reinberger Gallery. An opening reception will be held from 6 to 8pm Friday, June 21. Details regarding an after-party to follow the opening reception will soon be announced.

Magdalena Moskalewicz, PhD is an art historian, author and editor based in Chicago, whose curatorial collaborations with living artists critically investigate particular histories, localities and identities with the goal of reshaping dominant narratives. Born in Warsaw, Poland, Moskalewicz has worked at collecting, exhibiting and academic institutions internationally. This includes The Museum of Modern Art, New York, where she was the Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow for C-MAP, MoMA’s global research initiative; the 56th Venice Biennale, where she curated the Polish Pavilion in 2015; and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she taught and mentored the next generation of socially aware artists and arts administrators. Most recently, she was the Chief Curator of FRONT International: Cleveland Triennial for Contemporary Art. Moskalewicz has engaged in the revisionist rewriting of art histories and in exploring parallels between the postsocialist and postcolonial conditions through both academic publications and curatorial practice. Her scholarly research has focused on socialist modernism, neo-avantgardes, global exhibition histories and cultural policies. She is interested in re-envisioning models of knowledge production, communication and display.
